Field Sobriety Tests

Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) are a series of physical and cognitive assessments used by law enforcement officers to evaluate a person's level of impairment due to alcohol or drugs during a traffic stop. These tests are designed to help officers establish probable cause for a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) arrest. Standardized FSTs typically include the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk-and-Turn, and One-Leg Stand tests. The HGN measures involuntary eye movement, while the Walk-and-Turn assesses a person's ability to follow instructions and maintain balance during a divided attention task. The One-Leg Stand evaluates balance and coordination. It's important to note that the accuracy of FSTs can be influenced by various factors, including medical conditions, environmental conditions, and an individual's physical fitness. Refusal to participate in FSTs is generally within an individual's rights, but it may lead to other consequences, such as arrest. If facing DUI charges based on FST results, consulting with a qualified attorney is advisable to assess the validity of the tests and explore potential legal defenses.
